Akhaura ((ベンガル語:আখাউড়া )) is an Upazila of Brahmanbaria District, a district of Chittagong, Bangladesh. Akhaura Upazila, with an area of 99.28 km2. It borders Brahmanbaria Sadar Upazila to the north, Kasba Upazila to the south, Tripura (India) to the east and Brahmanbaria Sadar Upazila in the west. The main river in the surrounding area is the Titas River. It played an important historical role during both World War II and Liberation War of Bangladesh. Akhaura is a transportation hub in Bangladesh. It is a Municipality City with an area of 2.35 km2 and a population of 32,435; male 50.43%, female 49.57%. It has nine wards and 23 mahallas. The administration of Akhaura thana, now an upazila, was established in 1976. The upazila includes one municipality, five union parishads, 107 mouzas and 113 villages. ==History== Historical events: During the British colonial period, Akhaura was a famous jute-trading centre. From here, bailed jute used to be exported to the industrial city of Dundee, England. During the war of liberation, Bir Shrestha Mohammad Mostafa Kamal was killed in an encounter with the Pakistan army at Daruin village, in the Akhaura Sector.
